3 Positive Ways You Can Celebrate Juneteenth This Year
Juneteenth is the first holiday to become federally recognized since Martin Luther King’s birthday in 1983. This important holiday is a vital part of African American history and marks the day enslaved African Americans were granted their freedom. Juneteenth, which combines the words “June” and nineteenth,” was first celebrated on June 19, 1895. Troops marched into Galveston, Texas, to alert over 200,000 enslaved people of their freedom—nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Here are three positive ways you can celebrate Juneteenth:
- Throw a Juneteenth feast.
Food is a vital part of African American culture, so it’s only fitting that we celebrate the holiday with meals shared with loved ones! Traditionally, red foods are eaten at Juneteenth feasts. Red foods are vibrant and were different from their norm at the time.
So if you want to celebrate the right way, be sure to have some red beans, red velvet cake, hot sauce, and other red foods at your get-together!
- Support a Black-owned business.
One of the best and easiest ways to celebrate the holiday is by buying Black. Circulating the dollar within the Black community helps the community as a whole economically, so find some Black-owned brands to support.
Original Juneteenth celebrations included meetings to talk about the progress of Black people. Supporting Black-owned businesses is an excellent way to aid in that economic acceleration.
- Rest. One of the most positive ways Black people can celebrate this holiday is by practicing self-care and checking in on themselves.
